You may have seen videos online of kangaroos with bulging muscles towering over humans. While you may not believe everything you see on the internet, it is true that kangaroos can be very large and well defined.

There are 45 species of kangaroos and kangaroos in all, and they all come in different sizes. Some, like the muskrat, do not grow more than 15 to 20 centimeters and weigh an average of only 300 grams.

Then there are the giant red kangaroos, which average up to 1.5 meters tall. However, some large males can reach a height of 1.8 metres, with the largest recorded male reaching 2.1 metres!

Of course, the average kangaroo is between 0.8 and 1.8 meters tall, while females are usually much smaller. But as mentioned, this varies significantly from one kangaroo species to another.

How high can a red kangaroo soar?

The red kangaroo is considered the largest of all Australian mammals and kangaroos. Some adult male red kangaroos can grow up to 1.8 meters tall, but on average they are between 1.3 and 1.6 meters tall.

A female red kangaroo is usually much smaller, around 0.85 to 1 meter long.

However, this does not include the tail. Thus, the total length of a male red kangaroo is 1 to 1.2 meters, while the length of a female is another 0.65 to 0.85 meters.

The giant red kangaroo is the largest of all kangaroos and one in particular became an internet sensation until its death in 2018.

How big can a western gray kangaroo get?

Western gray kangaroos are much smaller than their red counterparts, as are eastern gray kangaroos.

On average, a western gray kangaroo grows between 0.8 and 1.2 meters. By standing on yourhind legs, reaching about 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) in height. Their tail length tends to add another 0.5 to 1 meter in length.

As with red kangaroos, the western gray species sees a distinct difference in body size between males and females. A female western gray kangaroo is usually much smaller than a male, and many of the males are twice the size of the females.

This species of kangaroo typically lives in open forests, mallee savannahs, coastal heaths, and wooded regions that typically receive more than 10 inches of rainfall. Most live in Western Australia (hence the name).

How big can an eastern gray kangaroo get?

An eastern gray kangaroo is usually larger than a western gray but smaller than a red kangaroo.

On average, the height of an eastern gray kangaroo is about 0.95 to 1.8 meters. But its large and powerful tail can add another 0.43 to 1.1 meters in length.

The eastern gray kangaroo is not only much smaller than its red counterpart, but also much lighter. Compared to the weight of a male red kangaroo (about 55 to 90 kilograms), it's a maleeastern gray kangarooit only weighs about 50 to 66 kg.

The same is true for female red kangaroos, which typically weigh between 18 and 40 kilograms, while eastern grays average between 17 and 40 kilograms.

The difference in size and weight between males and females can be seen in all kangaroo species. This is due to sexual dimorphism, in which males and females differ not only in their sex organs.

Not only are female kangaroos generally smaller, but they can also be half the size of males. Also, males and females look quite different.

The eastern gray kangaroo inhabits the eastern regions of Australia, mainly along the coast in states such as New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

Tasmania is also home to its own kangaroo, known as the Tasmanian eastern gray kangaroo.

The red kangaroo's closest relative, the antelope kangaroo, is found in the rainforests of Australia, particularly the Northern Territories, Cape York Peninsula, Queensland and the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Although smaller than the red kangaroo, the antelope is much smaller in stature and size. On average, male antelope wallabies grow to about 1.2 meters. Including its tail, it could be 0.9 meters longer.

Female antelope wallabies are usually much smaller than males, averaging just 0.84 meters in length. The tail can add another 0.7 meters to its length.

When standing upright, an antelope kangaroo is typically around 1.1 meters tall.
